This sweet little garden is scrappy but joyful. Bu This sweet little garden is scrappy but joyful. Built with plants given lovingly by friends and neighbors, including sage and chives and one dandelion I didn’t want to pull. It has taken a lot for me to start my life over after living on an island for 15 years, a lifetime in many ways, and it is in deep gratitude that I watch my new life seed and grow, and delight in what pops up by way of receiving and welcoming what comes.

Nestled on a hillside overlooking Seal Harbor beach, I found stone benches and flowers with trees and ocean and islands. A morning painter’s dream. And it was warm enough to be barefoot. Beatrix Ferrand, American landscape gardener and landscape architect, designed this little park (among many others across Mount Desert Island and beyond). I wonder if she knew how much joy and inspiration her vision would bring for so many for years and years to come.
