Dear to me is this sweet view from the North shore Dear to me is this sweet view from the North shore of Islesford. On our first day day of the Painted Island retreat, we got rained out of our first location, and ended up painting from the front porch all together, which ended up being quite cozy and a nice way to get to know each other as we painted. Perhaps these trees also ended up closer together in the painting as a result. So thankful for the great group we had this year, and a huge thanks to @marieirenelocke and @nancywagnerartist for their warm and generous hosting and for making the most delicious wholesome homemade meals in the tiniest island kitchen! I was so moved by the power of this group of women to create together not just impressive works of art, but a circle of sharing, humor, support, care and connection. This piece started out as an exercise during my Pa This piece started out as an exercise during my Painted Island retreat, the assignment being to lay down a background color, paint dark silhouetted forms of vegetation against the sky, cut in and around with a lighter color. It was a warm up practice for the week, to simplify what we’re seeing, get comfortable mixing paint, being free and not so precious with what we’re making. The result for me was pretty flat and 2-dimensional. But in going back into the painting with more layers, this scene appeared. I am reminded that something ordinary and easily overlooked, like the grasses and plants growing at our feet, or a somewhat basic painting, hold windows into worlds with a second glance, a second chance.
